December

Dear Neighbour,

I hope this newsletter finds you and your family happy and healthy as the Holiday Season begins. This will be a very different season than many of us are used to, but I know we will still find joy in our smaller gatherings and celebrations. Peel Region is now in the "grey" lock down zone of the Province's COVID-19 framework. Please take great care and only leave home for essential trips. If we all work together we can ensure we move out of the current restrictions as soon as possible.

Best wishes to you and yours,

Dipika

Speeding is right at the top of the concerns I hear from our community. I am working with many of you to lower the speed limits from 50km to 40km in your neighbourhoods as well as to explore traffic calming measures. In the meantime, here is a novel idea to help with road safety!

The City of Mississauga has partnered with Peel Regional Police on the road safety program called #TakeThePledgePeel, after it was endorsed by Council and the City’s Road Safety Committee.

The #TakeThePledgePeel program advocates for drivers to slow down and encourages other road users to be aware of their surroundings on the roads.

The pledge can be made by any road user. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

To sign up to take the pledge, visit https://forms.peelpolice.ca/Campaign-Forms/Take-The-Pledge-Peel.

Community Outdoor Rink

This year we have a community rink in Ward 7 at Gordon Lummis Park 236 Paisley Blvd West!

If you or someone you know would be interested in participating, please have them contact Parks.CommunityDevelopment@mississauga.ca. Even though it is after the deadline, we will evaluate the park location (needs water and electrical infrastructure in place) and accommodate where we can.

New Accessible Pedestrian Traffic Signals
The City's Traffic Signals Department was recently approached by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) to install an Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) system.

As a result, I'm pleased to report that the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road West and Confederation Parkway has been equipped with the new equipment as of November 26th.

Winter Parks Update

Given the lock down, we know that many of you will be out and about outdoors. That is why, even though community centres will be closed, we are enhancing other services to make it easier for folks to be outdoors this holiday season.

Washrooms
Park washrooms designed for year-round use will remain open this season with enhanced cleaning practices (cleaned 4 times per day by contract cleaning staff). Many of our parks and trails connect into Community Centres or Arenas that are normally open for washroom access. With the 28-day Grey-level lockdown, these facilities will not provide the same access as before. Local food establishments also remain closed at this time.

In addition to our year round washrooms, we are securing portable washrooms to be placed in high demand locations and key trail areas. These washrooms are winterized and accessible and will be located in areas that receive winter maintenance.

Locations:

  • 9 Creeks Trail- (west) Lorne Park Library parking lot and (east) Westfield Drive trail entrance

  • Courtney Park CC

  • Frank McKechnie CC

  • Huron Park CC

  • Iceland Arena

  • Malton CC

  • Meadowvale CC

  • Meadowvale Conservation Park

  • Mississauga Valley CC

  • Paul Coffey (lot at castle playground)

  • Port Credit Arena

  • River Grove CC

  • South Common CC

Winter Friendly Trails
The vast majority of our trails receive regular winter maintenance. For trails (or sections of trails) that don’t receive winter maintenance we will be adding additional woodchips to help with traction and keep the trails marked for winter use.

Park Amenities:
The following park amenities will be open this year for use by the community:

  • Leash free zones

  • Toboggan hills

  • Box soccer- will be left unlocked for community use

  • Sport Courts

  • Playgrounds

  • Picnic shelters

  • Outdoor fitness equipment

  • Secondary sports fields

  • Artificial fields- will be left unlocked for community use

  • All parks for walking, snowshoeing etc.

Parks staff will complete additional winter maintenance on pathways leading to these amenities where possible. No specific winter maintenance will occur on these facilities, however regular inspections by staff will occur. Additional garbage cans will be placed throughout the park system in areas where our sanitation trucks can service them in anticipation of increased demand.

Parks staff are providing winter maintenance for 173 parking lots including community centres, arenas and libraries. Staff from Recreation and Parks, Forestry and Environment are continuing to examine further opportunities to enhance outdoor spaces and programming options for residents.
