Mississauga as an Independent City

There are two tiers of municipal governance in Mississauga, as many of you are aware of. The Region of Peel and City of Mississauga. The Region of Peel provides services such as waste management, public health, and social services to all residents of the region. The City of Mississauga is responsible for providing services such as public transit, parks and recreation, and local bylaws and regulations to its residents. There may be some overlap in responsibilities.

For example, if you are caught speeding on Mavis Road, it would be considered a city issue. The City of Mississauga is responsible for enforcing traffic laws within its jurisdiction.  If you are caught speeding on Cawthra it would be the region and if it’s on Queensway then it’s both tiers.
